Record where and when water collects

Observe the driveway during and after rainfall from a safe position. Note low spots, blocked channels, water arriving from elsewhere and how long ponding remains. Photographs help explain the problem at a survey. Do not assume a surface puddle proves one particular defect or that a new top layer will resolve it.

Check levels and the rainfall route

A drainage proposal should explain how water reaches a collection or infiltration point and where it ultimately goes. Thresholds, neighbouring land and the public footway need consideration. A universal percentage fall is not a complete design. Avoid directing water onto the road or another property as a default remedy.

Match permeable paving to its construction

A permeable surface works as part of a wider arrangement involving joints or voids, supporting layers and an appropriate route for water. Ordinary blocks are not made permeable simply by leaving gaps. Resin bound finishes also need a compatible base and drainage design. Ask for the complete proposed system rather than relying on a material label.

Understand channels and soakaways

A channel collects water but still needs a suitable destination and capacity. A soakaway depends on ground conditions, siting and the surrounding property. Neither should be added without assessing suitability and any relevant requirements. Ask how debris will be removed and how components can be accessed after the driveway is finished.

Keep vehicle crossings separate

A dropped kerb provides vehicle access across the footway; it is not a default drainage outlet. Coordinate the entrance levels with the approved crossing and the private drainage arrangement. If the existing frontage has drainage or access problems, identify responsibility for each part before ordering surfacing work.

Agree repair scope and maintenance

The remedy may involve cleaning accessible drainage, correcting levels, rebuilding supporting construction or installing an appropriate drainage system. Ask why the proposed work addresses the observed cause. Keep channels and accessible outlets clear using suitable methods, and investigate recurring ponding or movement rather than repeatedly covering the visible symptoms.
